Most of the city's architecture, in the central area seems medieval, and some of it is. Although, time has passed, Chester still retains a Roman feel, Romain remains still being present today in the city. The most significant Roman feature is the amphitheatre, standing just outside the walls, which is undergoing archaeological investigation.
The city's most important surviving medieval structure is Chester Castle, particularly the Agricola Tower, and the most significant museum is the Grosvenor Museum, boasting a wonderful and rare collection of Roman tombstones and an art gallery.
Perhaps, one of the most interesting things about Chester is that most of the land within its limits is owned by the Duke of Westminster - Grosvenor is the Duke's family name, thus the Grosvenor Bridge, the Grosvenor Hotel, and Grosvenor Park.
The Eastgate Clock, which was built at the end of the 19th century to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, was originally the main entrance into the city, and it is definitely worth checking out, when visiting.
Also worth seeing is the Chester Town Hall and the Tudor House, which is one of the city's oldest houses, dating since 1603.
Stanley Palace, dating from 1591, is just as spectacular and as popular as the already major sights in Chester, therefore it would make a fabulous visit, as well.
