Attractions in Chester

Whether you prefer visiting historic sights or have fun with your family in Chester, there is a wide range of options for you to choose from. The city attractions will welcome you in and near the city centre.

Here is a list of the most famous places you must see while being in Chester.

Chester Zoo

Upton-by-Chester, Chester CH2 IEU

A visit to the Zoo will make your trip to Chester a unique and amazing experience. Located near the city centre, in the north, the Zoo houses more than 7000 animals, from which 400 species are either endangered or rare. The Zoo is considered the greatest in UK and it attracts over a million adults and children each year. If you are taking your family to the Zoo, you should know that children under the age of 14 must be attended by an adult. The place is open daily from 10.00 AM and a ticket will cost you around £14.95, for an adult, and £10.95, for a child.

Grosvenor Museum

A visit to the museum will help you imagine how Chester looked in the past, through Roman objects, tombstones and soldiers! The museum is open daily and admission is free, although small donations count and the place would benefit from your kindness.

Eastgate Clock

Old City Centre

Right after Big Ben, the Eastgate Clock is the most famous clock in the entire England. The gate above which the clock is placed, was actually the entry in the city of Deva (Roman Chester) and today is the most popular spot for tourists, especially for taking photos. The Eastgate Clock can be visited daily, for free, so don't miss it!

Chester Cathedral

12, Abbey Square

A distinguished building, originally raised by the Saxons, rebuilt three times and changed from church to cathedral during Henry VIII's reign, at this request. If you are passionate about history, culture and architecture, this landmark is a must see in Chester!

You can visit the cathedral from Monday to Saturday, starting with 9.00 AM and on Sunday, from 1.00 PM, at a cost of approximately £5.00 per person.

Dewa Roman Experience

Pierpoint Lane, Bridge Street

Have you ever wished to wear real Roman armour or fire a catapult? If you're in Chester, then all of this and even much more adventurous experiences wait for you in this interactive hands-on museum that will make you flinch every step of the way. You can visit the museum from 9.00 AM - 5.00 PM, Monday to Saturday, at a cost of £4.95 for an adult's ticket.

Chester Roman Amphitheatre

The Chester Roman Amphitheatre is the largest uncovered amphitheatre in the entire United Kingdom.

The site is under continuous excavations, therefore new discoveries and the best time to visit it is in the summer when the works are more intense.

The Amphitheatre is open for tourists all day and there is no admission fee to visit it.

Grosvenor Park

Besides the amazing surroundings that Grosvenor, the main park of Chester, can offer you, it is also a great place to spend an active, fun day with your family or friends. The park, which is also considered a garden centre, houses a miniature railway which crosses the park, being a preferred city attraction by the tourists.

Complete City Walls

A top attraction in Chester, and also in England, the walls that surround Chester are constructed on top of the original Roman walls, built 2000 years ago. The city walls are a landmark of Chester and they express different periods in the city's history.

If you need some time for yourself and your thoughts, and need to have a relaxing walk, we suggest you to start from Eastgate Clock and walk along the walls to enjoy the marvelous landscapes and surroundings.
